LA PLATA, MD — In a recent judgment by the Charles County Circuit Court, Daevian Davon Christian Hurd, a 23-year-old resident of Indian Head, has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually abusing a minor. The sentencing, delivered on Wednesday by Judge Makeba Gibbs, follows Hurd's guilty plea on July 31, 2023, to charges of sexual abuse of a minor.
The case began to unfold on March 8, 2021, when a Charles County Sheriff's Office detective was handed a crucial interview transcript conducted with the victim by the Prince George's County Department of Social Services. According to the victim's statements, she was subjected to repeated sexual assaults by Hurd over a span starting in 2018 and stretching into 2019. The assaults reportedly began when the victim was in the third grade.
Investigative findings disclosed that Hurd engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with the minor at a residence in Indian Head, primarily touching her over her clothing on various occasions. The gravity of these offenses was underscored by additional revelations about Hurd's criminal background. During the time of the investigation, he was already incarcerated in Prince George's County facing separate charges for similar offenses involving different victims.
The court's decision to impose a five-year prison sentence reflects the serious nature of Hurd's offenses and underscores the judicial system's commitment to addressing and penalizing such acts of sexual violence, especially against minors.
This case not only highlights the ongoing challenges communities face in protecting vulnerable populations but also emphasizes the role of inter-county cooperation in bringing offenders to justice.
