Daily writing prompt
What's your favorite game (card, board, video, etc.)? Why?
Truth be told, I'm not very big into playing cards, board games or video games. I'm not entirely sure why that might be.
Perhaps growing up, there were just too many other things to occupy my time. Playing sports and being outside took up a fair portion of that. As well, I really enjoyed and still love to park my butt in a comfy chair and read for a while.
Many kids of my generation and before me(at least the ones I know) learned to play cards while eating lunch at school. I always went home for lunch, seeing as for my whole elementary and high school years, we lived four minutes away. In addition, almost all folks I know who are older than me, all know how to play a variety of card games. I suspect this is mostly due to not having a wide variety of activities to entertain one another to occupy their time growing up 1940s and early 1950s, before the invention of television.
When it comes specifically to card games, I have a very difficult time in a couple of places. First, understanding the rules. Believe me, I've tried certain card games many times, but can never get a handle on the rules. And secondly, being able to focus enough on the play to get a grip on strategy. What card to play when to play it and so on. I have trouble concentrating enough on what's happening.
I never could really understand and still don't for that matter, the draw and appeal of a "boys' poker night." Hell, I know folks who go all out. The regulation poker table; cigars; whiskey; plus a table full of snacks expertly prepared by the spouse. But, at least they're not out robbing convenience stores.
I did play many different board games with our daughter when she was young. But, reflecting back even she wasn't too big into them as I remember.
But, I get that many folks are into board games, card games of many descriptions and especially video games.
I will admit though, back in the early 1980s when Trivial Pursuit was the rage across North America, I really enjoyed playing that. You didn't need any big skill, other than being able to roll dice and move a little circle thing around the board. But what was a really handy skill to have was a well-developed deep reservoir of trivia.
A vast knowledge of a lot of things(mostly useless or not very relevant bits of information) but not necessarily having any expertise in any of them. The game was the perfect solution It was like it was invented for me.
I could always do very well playing it.
