Corner Drug Co., which has been serving Yolo County since 1897 as one of Woodland's oldest businesses and the third-oldest pharmacy in California recently completed its transition to the third generation of ownership.
The new ownership team is led by pharmacy manager Sara Shelley, who has been a fixture at Corner Drug Co. since childhood and has been guiding pharmacy operations since graduating from the University of Pacific in 2008.
Her spouse Erik Daniells and sister Kristina Beggs, both pharmacy technicians, own and operate the store by her side. Lisa Shelley, a second-generation pharmacist and former owner will stay behind the counter as a pharmacist.
Lisa and Sara Shelley follow in the footsteps of Karl Hanke, who started with Corner Drug Co. as a delivery boy in the 1940s. Later, after attending pharmacy school, Hanke returned as a pharmacist and joined Howard Gregg and Jess Vickery's ownership team in 1959. The store was established in 1897 by Wallace Pond.
Lisa operated Corner Drug through the years with her husband Edward Shelley, who was the buyer and store manager. Ed served on the board of the Downtown Improvement Association and, among other organizations, raised three kids, and handled outreach and marketing for Corner Drug before retiring in 2013. Both of them served on city commissions, with Ed serving on the Traffic and Safety Commission, and Lisa on the former Historical Preservation Committee.
"We are proud to uphold the legacy of our historic multigenerational business," Daniells said. "It's an honor to have served some of the same families for so many years, as well as reducing barriers to pharmacy access to vulnerable populations. We have many exciting opportunities ahead for our community but our commitment to our core values of efficiency, empathy and service are as strong as ever. Sara and I are excited to have Lisa stay on with us and offer her experience and expertise to our growing team."
Daniells and Shelley are deeply rooted in the community, serving on boards of local nonprofits, including the Guild of the Woodland Opera House and NAMI Yolo County, the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. They are also renovating a historic mid-century modern home in Woodland and were recently featured on Stroll Through History.
Beggs and Shelley have also both previously served on the Historic Woodland Downtown Business Association board.
All of them are passionate about raising funds and awareness for local issues, including mental health, food insecurity, senior advocacy and at-risk youth.
"You may wonder in this age of technology and massive stores everywhere how a corner drugstore continues to be the success that it is," Stallard said during the 2022 meeting. "They treat everybody wonderfully. They'll do anything for their customers and the service is terrific."
Corner Drug Co. is a community pharmacy located at 602 Main St. Some of their services include personalized adherence packaging, vaccinations and affordable delivery throughout most of Yolo County. They can be found online at cornerdrugco.com
