We haven't said much to anybody about this, other than our daughter, but over the past couple of months, we've been more or less actively looking for a new furry member to add to the "old homestead" here.
The word furry should be an obvious clue ..... and no it's not a cat; a rat; a mouse; or a moose. I like cats but am exceedingly allergic to them. Like BAD allergic to them.
Dogs, well not allergic to at all or very, very minor.
Well, we found one or he found us.
This Ollie.
He is a two-year-old pomeranian/terrier mix.
He is coming to us via a Nova Scotia dog rescue called "Elderdog." Elderdog is a Canada-wide dog rescue society that focuses on rehoming dogs who are older or rehoming dogs of older folks(senior citizens) who perhaps can't look after the animal anymore or are heading into a care facility and can't take their pooch with them.
Ollie came to Elderdog through no fault of his own. He was originally owned by a couple who thought they wanted him but realized that they had no time for him. Ollie was alone a fair bit. They had decided the best solution to their issue or perceived problem was to euthanize Ollie.
An older neighbour or friend of Ollie's owners said that was a stupid idea(what did Ollie do to deserve this) and took Ollie in, even though they didn't really want a dog to look after.
After having Ollie for a while now, this older neighbour thought for Ollie it would be best to re-home him through Elderdog.
We had previously sent an application to Elderdog for another dog a month or so ago. Unfortunately for us, it didn't work out.
Then we saw Ollie.
I phoned the coordinator, letting her know that we were interested in him. Because they had previously had our application, she immediately thought during my phone conversation with them, that we would be a good candidate for a dog. And as such a good candidate for Ollie. That was a couple of weeks ago.
Moving on, after they checked references and we sent them a video walk-through of our house(apparently it was a challenge for them to schedule a home visit), Lynn got a call about 7:00pm last night, that we had been selected as Ollie's new home.
The coordinator will call Lynn this morning(Thursday) to finalize details on getting Ollie. He currently resides east of Halifax in the Musquodoboit Harbour area of Nova Scotia. Ollie will be heading off to the vet for a final check-up and to be neutered. After that, it will be a matter(I think) of coordinating picking him up.
To be it mildly, last night was a bit of a blur. And it still is this morning. Without a doubt, we're thrilled beyond belief to be getting Ollie. But, depending on timing, this may very well throw a huge wrench into vacation plans for July and the first week of August.
But, as I said to Lynn last night ......... there are no problems here getting Ollie ......only solutions. Just simply deal with the one problem(whatever that may be and there may not be any at all) that is immediately in front of us. Forget about issues that may be a week or two away. We'll deal with those when or if they occur.
Utilize the same approach we took when we uprooted ourselves from Ontario to the shores of the Bay of Fundy. It worked then and it will work again.
And so, off today to buy dog stuff and to look at dog stuff. Good thing I got paid today.
