A federal government worker from Calvert County, Maryland, is celebrating a surprising $50,000 windfall after playing the Maryland Lottery's Jumbo Cash scratch-off game. The man, affectionately known as Pop Pop, plans to share his newfound wealth with his grandchildren and pay off bills while keeping the win under wraps.
Pop Pop stumbled upon his fortune at Jughead Liquor in California, Maryland. Typically, he would purchase the $10 50X The Cash scratch-off, which has previously earned him amounts ranging from $100 to $500. However, on a spontaneous decision, he opted to try his luck with two Jumbo Cash tickets instead. "I've been lucky, from time to time," he remarked, reflecting on his previous wins.
His usual routine of scratching off tickets on-site continued that day. The first ticket revealed no prize, but the second ticket held the $50,000 jackpot. The shock of the win prompted him to leave the store immediately without informing the clerk of his prize. "I walked out," he recalled. "That one was, 'Woo!' I couldn't believe it. I said, 'This must be $50.'"
Questioning the reality of his win, Pop Pop drove to a nearby 7-Eleven to scan the ticket again, only to see the same $50,000 message reaffirmed. Overwhelmed and cautious, he secured the ticket at home, out of sight, until he could officially claim his prize at the Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The Jumbo Cash game, which launched in April, still offers plenty of opportunities for others to win, with three $250,000 top prizes and three $50,000 second-tier prizes remaining. Additionally, there are numerous smaller prizes ranging from $10 to $10,000.
The Maryland Lottery continues to provide thrilling opportunities for residents like Pop Pop, who now faces the delightful challenge of discreetly sharing his joy and bounty with his family.
