BOWIE, Md. — The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, were unable to complete their ninth-inning rally, falling 4-2 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, at Prince George's Stadium on Monday night.
The Baysox (4-3, 36-39) faced a 4-0 deficit heading into the ninth inning. With two outs, Dylan Beavers sparked a late surge with a double, followed by two consecutive walks issued by Richmond reliever Will Bednar. A bases-loaded walk to John Rhodes brought in Bowie's first run. A wild pitch from Bednar then allowed TT Bowens to score, placing the tying runs in scoring position. However, the rally fell short as Silas Ardoin struck out swinging, ending the game.
Richmond (2-5, 36-40) established an early lead in the second inning with a two-run single from Turner Hill, who had a standout performance with a game-high four hits. Hill's second-inning hit came off Bowie's starting right-hander Ryan Long (L, 0-4).
Long was on the verge of limiting the damage in the fifth inning, but Hill's single followed by a two-run homer from Ismael Munguia extended Richmond's lead to 4-0. Long completed five innings, yielding four runs on four hits, three walks, and four strikeouts in the loss. It marked Long's first start since May 19 at Binghamton.
Richmond's starting left-hander John Michael Bertrand (W, 4-4) delivered another dominant performance against Bowie, pitching seven scoreless innings. Bertrand allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five. This outing extended his scoreless streak against the Baysox to 20 innings this season.
The Baysox will look to bounce back in the second game of the three-game home series against Richmond on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Prince George's Stadium. Bowie will send right-hander Kyle Brnovich (5-2, 2.88 ERA) to the mound, while Richmond counters with right-hander Dylan Cumming (0-2, 3.63 ERA).
Tuesday night's game features Military Appreciation Night, offering half-priced box seat tickets for those with proof of military service. The series concludes on Wednesday with an Independence Day Celebration, highlighted by the season's biggest fireworks show. Additionally, Baysox game-worn Fourth of July jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit Promise Land Farm.
