The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, emerged victorious in a doubleheader against the Reading Fightin' Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday. The Baysox clinched the first game 2-1 in 10 innings and followed it up with a 6-3 win in the second game.
The first game, which started on Saturday, was disrupted by a 1 hour, 55-minute rain delay after two and a half scoreless innings. When play resumed, Bowie broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer from TT Bowens, marking his eighth home run of the season. Bowens continues to lead the team with 40 RBIs.
However, before the bottom of the sixth could be completed, rain returned, causing the game to be suspended. The game was scheduled to resume on Sunday at 3:15 pm but faced further delays, eventually starting at around 4:30 pm. In the bottom of the sixth, Trevor Schwecke doubled in the tying run for Reading, evening the score at one.
The game remained tied through the regulation nine innings, pushing it into extra innings. With two outs and the go-ahead run on second in the top of the tenth, Jud Fabian hit an RBI single off Reading right-hander Tommy McCollum, giving Bowie a 2-1 lead. Bowie right-hander Lincoln Henzman pitched three scoreless innings of relief, stranding the tying run on second in the bottom of the tenth to secure the win. Henzman also executed a key defensive play by cutting down the tying run in a rundown between third and home.
In the second game, Bowie (4-2, 36-38) never trailed, taking an early lead in the first inning with an RBI double by Fabian against Reading starter Konnor Ash (L, 0-3). Randy Florentino, in his first at-bat of the season, doubled in a run in the second inning, followed by a double from Donta' Williams in the fifth, giving the Baysox a 3-1 lead.
Starting right-hander Trace Bright delivered a solid performance, striking out seven batters over 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks in a no-decision. It was the first time since May 26 that the Orioles' No. 16 prospect had given up one run or less in a start.
The Baysox extended their lead with three runs in the seventh inning. Samuel Basallo doubled in a run, a fielding error by Reading first baseman Bryce Ball allowed Basallo to score from third, and a sacrifice fly from Collin Burns made it 6-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ball hit a two-run homer off right-handed reliever Bradley Brehmer, who was making his Double-A debut. Brehmer, promoted from High-A Aberdeen, earned his first Double-A win, pitching 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Right-hander Levi Stoudt struck out the side in a scoreless eighth inning, and right-hander Keagan Gillies recorded his third save of the season with a perfect ninth inning, ensuring the Baysox's victory.
The Baysox will begin their next homestand on Monday, July 1, at 6:35 pm against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in a three-game series running from July 1 through July 3.
