Here is the final update on my Baba Yaga project (for reference, see: Baba Yaga Inspired Ceramics, Baba Yaga Hut, and Baba Yaga Hut Update)! I am so proud and happy with how it came out! Seeing it finished made all of the hours I've spent making it so worth it! I feel like I have learned a lot about myself as an artist and the archetype of Baba Yaga while making this.
One thing is for certain is that experimenting and making test and sketches before committing completely is so important! It's easy to get excited and jump the gun when creating art but if you take a little extra time and work to go through some different options to pick your favorite, you will end up with something you're more happy with in the end.
Another realization I've had is make art for YOURSELF! When you create things because they bring you joy the finished art will have a magic about it that will naturally draw people to it. When you are worried about what other people will think about it you forget that the art making process should really be for yourself! Humans are all different and equally amazing and the same goes for what we create.
Once the hut successfully made it out of the kiln one last time all the was left was to connect the hut to the chicken legs! I did this by using rebar and epoxy. I had to make a stable base that held it in the final position I wanted it in while it set. One of the first things I did after that was take it out into the woods for a photo shoot! It looks so at home among the trees.
While I am finished with this project I'm not ready to say goodbye to the inspiration Baba Yaga gives me just yet! Next semester I have big plans to create smaller versions of this and figure out how to make the process faster and smoother overall so that I can make a bunch of variations. I want to make the roof removable and the windows open so that it can also be used as an incense or candle holder. I'm excited to keep creating from here.
