This week, we lean more towards the other side of NACFORADVENTURE: sustainability. The textile and clothing industry produces a lot of green house emissions, and it also contributes a large portion of global waste. Thanks to fast fashion, the clothing industry is unfortunately leading us down a dark path of unfathomably excess waste. It even impacts the amount of microplastics found in our soils and oceans because of polyester and synthetic materials.
While I was thrifting long before I learned about the problems with clothing production, I am now pretty committed to only buying long-lasting secondhand pieces, And where it's possible, I prefer them to be of natural fibers like wool, cotton or silk.
In addition, I also will create my own clothes. It makes me appreciate my time and the materials. In the long run, I am more willing to care for these pieces because I know how hard I worked on them. Plus, I like the fact that whatever I make is completely one-of-a-kind. It brings me joy that I have an individual style that is unlike any other human on the planet.
During this YouTube video, I take you on my process to create an upcycled vest inspired by one of my favorite local beers: The Squatter's Juicy IPA. I challenged myself to use only what I had on hand, including a couple quilts and comforters, and even some scraps from a cut-off tee I happen to be wearing in this video.
This project had some bumps and bruises (and knicks) along the way, but overall, I'm excited how it turned out.
The video is sponsored by Wasatch Brewery and Squatters Craft Beers. Huge thanks to these local Utah breweries for helping to support this channel!
