Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to engage in four days of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) programming at the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum. The sessions will take place from July 8-11, 2024, and July 22-25, 2024, focusing on outdoor science and exploration under the guidance of museum staff and education coordinator Sara Saunders, a local biologist.
The program is designed to immerse kids in the vibrant ecology of the Potomac River, with each day featuring a distinct nature theme complemented by fun crafts and activities. Children will explore Piney Point's grounds as part of the dynamic Potomac River ecosystem, focusing on topics such as native trees, herbs, birds, local insects, and their habitats. Activities include fishing, crabbing, beachcombing, recycled art projects, learning about historical boats, studying prehistoric creatures, and conducting water science experiments. The emphasis will be on the "Science" aspect of STEAM, showcasing the wonders of the local environment.
"Piney Point has so many interesting things for kids to explore," said Karen Stone, Manager of the St. Mary's County Museum Division. "We thought it would be great to continue offering this fun, yet educational, multiday STEAM program for children to enjoy during their summer break. With such a broad range of topics, they're sure to find lots of fun things to do while enjoying the outdoors at the lighthouse."
Parents are encouraged to book their child's slot soon, as each program is limited to 15 participants to ensure a hands-on experience. Registration is available at OutdoorAdventure2024.eventbrite.com at a cost of $50 per child per session. Discounted opportunities are available through the Museums for All program for SNAP or EBT cardholders. For more information, parents can contact Sara Saunders at sara.saunders@stmaryscountymd.gov.
Children should come prepared for a day of outdoor activities. Recommended items include a backpack with a snack, a hat or sunglasses, a personal water bottle, and pre-applied sunscreen and bug spray. A hand towel for cooling off throughout the day is also suggested due to the hot July temperatures in Southern Maryland.
The programs are scheduled for the mornings to avoid the heat, and activities will be adapted as necessary for comfort and safety. In the event of inclement weather, the program will move indoors while still covering many of the same subjects. Parents or guardians are welcome to accompany their children, especially if they are nervous about being in a new environment.
