Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has awarded four $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors in its service area. Recipients Sara Bevard, Noah Cusack, Daniel Howard, and Madison Montgomery were chosen based on scholastic achievement, financial need, and school and community involvement. Since the program's inception in 1993, SMECO has granted scholarships to 128 students.

Sara Bevard, a graduate of Calvert High School, plans to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, to study biomedical sciences. Bevard excelled academically, earning the Most Outstanding Academic Achievement awards in advanced-placement U.S. history, human body systems, and foundations of technology. She was inducted into the National Honor Society and actively participated in the Calvert Soccer Association as a player and coach. Bevard also held leadership roles in the Junior Optimist Club and was recognized as the Optimist Club's Outstanding Youth of Calvert County. She is the daughter of Bruce and Amy Bevard of St. Leonard.
Noah Cusack graduates from Maurice J. McDonough High School in Charles County and will pursue nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Cusack maintained a place on the Principal's Honors list throughout high school and received the AP Scholar Award. He was an active member of the school's "It's Academic" team, National Honor Society, and varsity sports teams, earning the Minds in Motion Scholar Athlete awards. Cusack also volunteered with Ainsley's Angels of America and organized community initiatives such as a book drive for a special education classroom. He is the son of Jenna and Peter Cusack of Port Tobacco.
Daniel Howard, also a graduate of Maurice J. McDonough High School, will study environmental science at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. Howard was involved in sports and music, playing soccer, lacrosse, and the saxophone in the symphonic band and pit orchestra. He participated in Future Farmers of America, helping his school achieve Green School certification through recycling and composting programs. Howard is the son of Alicia Greene of Waldorf.
Madison Montgomery graduates from Northern High School in Calvert County and aims to study finance at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Montgomery was recognized with the AP Scholar Award and other academic honors. An accomplished equestrian, she competed in United States Pony Club events and hunted with the Marlborough Hunt Club. She also contributed to her school community through the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Montgomery is the daughter of Scott and Heather Montgomery of Owings.
SMECO's scholarship program highlights its commitment to supporting the education and development of young people in Southern Maryland. Each year, the cooperative recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, leadership, and community service, helping them to further their education and achieve their career goals.
