NewJen bass held a team tournament on Clear Lake on Saturday. The tournament drew 39 teams and a number of large bass were caught. The winning team was Paul Bailey and Seth Dandridge of Upper Lake with a five fish limit that weighed 29.81 pounds. They collcted$2, 570 in prize money. The big fish of the tournament weighed 9.85 pounds and was caught by the team of Trend Elwood and Daryn Avalos. They collected $370.
There were a good number of large bass caught. More than half of the field weighed in 20 pounds of bass. A lot of the bass were caught off the spawning beds. There have been loads of fishermen out on the lake each day.
Just about every tournament fisherman has his boat equipped with the latest electronics which helps him locate bass even in dirty water. The electronics can pick out bait fish swimming and a bass stalking it. The fisherman will toss lure right alongside the bait fish and the bass will grab the lure.
The north end of the lake is starting to produce fish. The other hot spot is the Clear Lake Oaks arm around Rattlesnake Island.
Crappie are biting all around the lake. The more successful anglers are using live minnows and fishing around the docks. Some of the crappie are huge, weighing up to 2 pounds.
There is a crappie tournament scheduled for June 15. It is a team event and the entry fee is $100. In addition, there will be a lot of prizes raffled. The tournament will operate out of Library Park. Call Marlin Carpenter at 510-691-0586 for more information.
Lake Pillsbury is providing good bass fishing. The lake is full and in great shape. Indian Valley Reservoir is also kicking out good numbers of bass. I have been told the Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) will be stocking Indian Valley with trout this summer. Upper Blue Lake is providing decent trout action for both trollers and shore fishermen.
This is the perfect weekend to visit the Clear Lake State Park. The trails are all open and there is wildlife everywhere. The park entrance is located on Soda Bay Road.
