Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has appointed Traci Chappelear-Thomas as the new Director of Community Engagement and Equity. The Board of Education of Charles County approved her selection during its meeting on June 11, with her tenure set to begin on July 1.
Chappelear-Thomas transitions to this role from her current position as Supervisor of Human Resources, Strategic Partnerships, and Community Engagement and Public Information Officer for Calvert County Public Schools. Her new role at CCPS marks a return to the district where she previously taught business education at North Point High School for three years and coordinated K-12 Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs from 2015 to 2020.
Starting her educational career in 2006 at North Point High School, Chappelear-Thomas later taught at Manhattan Business Academy in New York and Leonardtown High School with St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS). She then assumed an administrative role at Margaret Brent Middle School with SMCPS as a vice principal before returning to Charles County to lead CTE programs.
In her role with Calvert County Public Schools, Chappelear-Thomas has been the community liaison for business partnerships, led systemwide professional development for antibias training, served as the Calvert County School Foundation Grant Chair, and managed systemwide recruiting, hiring, and retention of certificated and support personnel. She has also been the Title I human resources liaison and has maintained collaborative relationships with community stakeholders, overseeing systemwide communications, media relations, and social media management.
Chappelear-Thomas expressed her enthusiasm for her new position, stating, "I am excited for the opportunity to work with the students, staff, schools, and families of Charles County Public Schools. With this new role, I am eager to dive in and make impactful change for the community."
Chappelear-Thomas is currently pursuing a doctorate degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University in instructional leadership for changing populations. She holds an Equity and Excellence in Education Certificate from McDaniel College, a post-master's certification in administration and supervision from Notre Dame of Maryland University, a master's degree in leadership in teaching and secondary education certification in business from Notre Dame of Maryland University, and a bachelor's degree in international business from the State University of New York.
Her extensive background and dedication to educational excellence and equity are expected to greatly benefit CCPS as she steps into her new role, bringing her wealth of experience and passion for community engagement and equity to the district.
