Because of our heat, and the fact that our main hummingbird variety will not share with other birds: I use really small feeders and place them all over my yard.
On the way out the door with fresh hummingbird food.
I usually have five out at a time. In our feel like 112° heat, they go bad quickly and need to be cleaned out, soaked in bleach water, scrubbed, rinsed and refilled often. You can get these here: feeders
I put hummingbird food out until they leave for the winter. There's not a lot of liquid in south Texas in the summer.
I had a problem with bees one year so I bought these bee guards: bee guard (they are a little big for the feeders so I glued mine on with gorilla glue, like this: glue.) They have a little hinge on them and you can open them up to scrub them out. I also use tangle trap on the poles I hang these on to keep the ants out. Like this: tangle trap
Most plastic feeders leak. I use plumber's tape around the threads on mine, and they stay leak proof for as long as I leave the tape on. Here's a link to plumber's tape: plumber's tape
In spring I have a lot of flowers. Late summer I have a lot of flowers. But early summer, after the daylillies die down, there's not much out there for the birds.
I really enjoy sitting on my porch watching the birds fight over the nectar!
(Reminds me of the saying: It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog... or in this case: the fight in the hummingbird!)
My birds are grateful for the extra calories and I am just grateful to watch them zip around!
Meet you out in the garden where we'll sit in the shade and watch the hummers!
