LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Sheriff's Office recently celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated South Patrol District One Station with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at 6845 Crain Highway in La Plata. The event marked the culmination of a significant renovation project aimed at enhancing the sheriff's office's capabilities to serve the community.
The ceremony featured remarks from Sheriff Troy D. Berry, Captain Andrew Schwab, who currently commands the South Patrol Division, and Captain Charly Baker. Officer Wyatt Adams, honored as the most recent recipient of the Excellence in Patrol Award, had the distinction of cutting the ribbon. Additionally, certificates of appreciation were awarded to Chief of Building & Trades John Earle and Superintendent Colin Mohler from the Charles County Department of Public Works, recognizing their contributions to the project.
Sheriff Berry expressed his gratitude to everyone involved and emphasized the importance of the new facility. "This new facility will enhance our ability to serve and protect our growing community more effectively," Berry stated.
Captain Schwab highlighted the necessity of the new station to accommodate the county's growth and the resultant increase in staff. "Charles County continues to experience growth as new homes and businesses are built, prompting the Sheriff's Office to hire more police officers to maintain safety. We are constantly exploring options for additional space, including repurposing existing county buildings," Schwab noted.
The building has a rich history within the sheriff's office. It initially served as the Charles County Sheriff's Office Detention Center over twenty years ago and later housed individuals in the work-release program until that program concluded.
The renovation project was a collaborative effort, overseen by Captain Charles Baker, Captain Cari Baker, Captain Harry Ivers, Captain Andrew Schwab, and the Charles County Department of Public Works. Their efforts have transformed the building into a modern facility equipped to meet the demands of the growing community.
The new station represents a significant upgrade from its previous iterations, providing enhanced facilities for law enforcement personnel and better service to the public. The renovation ensures that the sheriff's office can continue to effectively maintain public safety as the community expands.
