I've been searching for the bright side lately. This photo is not it. Once again it's overcast and dreary outdoors instead of sunny and pleasant. This is getting tiresome and it's beginning to really bug me. My only option is to find something that distracts me from the miserable, wet weather, something constructive that I enjoy.
I won't say that I enjoy housework. I don't. But it can give me a certain amount satisfaction when the house is clean and I'm caught up on laundry. I just have to concentrate on the task at hand and ignore how much I dislike cleaning toilets! I'm getting better at doing smaller loads of laundry throughout the week instead of back to back loads in one or two days. I'm good at cleaning as I go in the kitchen, it's sweeping and mopping the floor that I dislike. One thing: I do not do housework on Sunday. If it didn't get done during the week it will wait until Monday.
The best thing is to do a bit of housekeeping in between knitting, spinning and puttering around on the laptop so it's not so time consuming. I keep reminding myself that Brad is retired and although I can't retire from being a homemaker I can do my best to make it all as simple and stress free as possible so we have time together around the house.
A great way to find a bit of joy in my day is to reach goals with my knitting or spinning. It's very satisfying to finish the ribbing on one sock and then work on getting to the same point with the second sock or to finish one bobbin on the spinning wheel and begin the second bobbin, or finish it, towards making a two ply yarn.
Sometimes it's as simple as putting a favorite disc in the bluray player while I knit away or chat with Brad, or simply put everything away, turn off the TV and grab a book or my e-reader. I have started the seventh book in the Cat Who series and always enjoy re-reading those books. I've also got all of the Mitch Rapp series to re-read as well as the Brother Cadfael books and the Dragonriders of Pern series. There are also some classics in my collection including Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and others.
So, when the middle of the afternoon is gloomy and dreary I have things to do to occupy my time and forget about the weather. Like right now. It's almost 3:30 pm and a cup of coffee sounds really good after a late lunch.
