The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, suffered a 13-5 defeat against the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, on Friday night at TD Bank Ballpark. Despite an early lead, the Baysox could not sustain their momentum against the Patriots' offensive onslaught.
The game began on a promising note for the Baysox as TT Bowens' RBI single in the first inning brought them a 1-0 lead. However, the Patriots quickly retaliated with a four-run bottom of the first inning against Bowie's starting pitcher, Cameron Weston. Weston struggled significantly, recording just two outs and giving up four runs on two hits and three walks over 33 pitches, marking his shortest outing of the season.
By the fourth inning, Somerset extended their lead to 5-1 and further widened the gap with back-to-back solo home runs from Anthony Seigler and Spencer Jones off Bowie's right-hander Dan Hammer. Despite the growing deficit, the Baysox showed resilience by scoring a run in the fifth inning and adding three more in the sixth. These included an RBI single by Frederick Bencosme, a solo homer by Bowens, and a two-run double by Collin Burns. Bowens' home run was his sixth of the season, part of a notable three-hit, two-RBI performance that increased his season total to 31 RBIs, tying him for fourth-most in the Eastern League.
However, the Patriots quickly regained control, scoring six unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Baysox bullpen, already stretched thin from a previous 12-inning game, could not contain the Patriots' offense. In the sixth inning, four runs were scored, including another homer from Seigler, a throwing error by Samuel Basallo that allowed Jones to score, an RBI single by Agustin Ramirez, and a sacrifice fly from Grant Richardson. Jasson Dominguez's two-run homer off left-hander Ryan Hennen in the seventh further solidified Somerset's lead.
Somerset's starter Trystan Vrieling earned the win, improving to a 4-4 record after pitching 5.2 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. In contrast, Bowie's pitching staff allowed a season-high 17 hits in the loss, a statistic indicative of the night's challenges.
Looking ahead, the Baysox continue their six-game road trip against the Patriots on Saturday night at 6:35 pm. Bowie's right-hander Trace Bright (0-3, 3.10 ERA) is set to start against Somerset's right-hander Blane Abeyta (2-5, 6.55 ERA).
Following the road trip, the Baysox will return home to Prince George's Stadium for a series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets, starting Tuesday, June 4, at 6:35 pm.
