The Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, extended their season-long losing streak to six games with an 8-4 defeat against the Reading Fightin' Phils, Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, at FirstEnergy Stadium on Tuesday night.
Reading (1-0, 32-37) started strong with a two-run home run by Eastern League RBI leader Carson Taylor in the first inning. Taylor, who drove in three runs on the night, led the charge for the Fightin' Phils. RBI singles from Ethan Wilson in the second and Trevor Schwecke in the third, both off Bowie starter Trace Bright (L, 0-8), further solidified Reading's lead. Taylor added another RBI single, making it 5-0 by the fifth inning.
Bright, struggling throughout, lasted only 3.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits, walking two, and striking out five in the loss.
The Baysox (0-1, 32-37) managed to get on the board in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Samuel Basallo off Reading starter Lachlan Wells (W, 3-5). Basallo's homer, which traveled 376 feet with an exit velocity of 104 mph, marked his 20th multi-hit game of the season.
In the seventh inning, Ryan Higgins brought Bowie closer with a two-run homer, his second in three games. However, the Fightin' Phils extended their lead with home runs by Caleb Ricketts and Robert Moore in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, off Bowie reliever Ryan Long, making it 8-3.
Bowie's Matthew Etzel hit his first Double-A homer in the ninth inning, an opposite-field solo shot, and Frederick Bencosme increased his hit streak to 10 games with a single in the fourth inning, tying the longest hit streak on the team.
Despite these efforts, Bowie couldn't overcome Reading's offense. The Baysox will continue their six-game series against the Fightin' Phils on Wednesday night, with right-hander Kyle Brnovich (4-2, 3.91 ERA) set to start against Reading's left-hander Matt Osterberg (1-4, 6.09 ERA). The game will begin at 7:00 pm at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Baysox's next homestand starts on Monday, July 1, at 6:35 pm against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The three-game series will run from July 1 to July 3, featuring various promotions. Monday will be "Kids Cheer Free" night, offering a free ticket with the purchase of a full-price box seat ticket. Tuesday is Military Appreciation Night, offering half-priced box seat tickets to military personnel with proof of service. Wednesday will feature an Independence Day celebration with the biggest fireworks show of the season and an auction of Baysox Game Worn 4th of July jerseys to benefit Promise Land Farm.
