A fire that broke out at a two-story single-family dwelling in Waldorf, Maryland, has resulted in significant structural and content losses. The incident occurred at 5612 Needlefish Court, Waldorf, in Charles County, at approximately 6:26 p.m. on June 5, 2024.
Kenneth Cote, the owner and occupant of the residence, was not injured in the incident. The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in structural damage and an additional $50,000 in content losses. The house was equipped with smoke alarms; however, there were no fire alarms or sprinkler systems installed.
The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department was the primary responding unit to the scene, mobilizing 50 firefighters to combat the blaze. The fire was brought under control in about 50 minutes after the initial alarm was raised. There were no arrests made in connection to the fire.
The fire was discovered by a passerby, who noticed smoke emanating from the attic area of the residence. The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined and remains under investigation by local authorities.
Despite the presence of smoke alarms, the lack of a fire alarm or sprinkler system may have contributed to the extent of the damage. One adult has been displaced as a result of the fire, and arrangements for temporary housing are being made.
