Yolo County and its partners are excited to invite community members to the Walnut Park Library community engagement and information night, an event highlighting the development of the new Walnut Park Library.
According to a Yolo County press release, community members are welcome to attend this informational event on Wednesday, May 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th Street in Davis.
The open house format of this event offers an exceptional opportunity for residents to engage directly with elected officials and project stakeholders, gaining insights into the transformative impact that the Walnut Park Library will create for all Yolo County residents.
Attendees will have the chance to explore the innovative building and landscape design, participate in the community art process, and learn about the defining features of this state-of-the-art facility. Representatives from Yolo County Library, Yolo County Office of Emergency Services, WMB Architects, the city of Davis and YoloArts will be available to answer questions and gather valuable feedback.
"We look forward to sharing a number of exciting updates with members of the public at this event," stated Yolo County Supervisor Jim Provenza. "The Walnut Park Library is moving forward on schedule, and we are excited to offer community members a chance to look at the design for the interior of the new library. I am grateful for the hard work of our county librarian and her team in taking the lead on this project."
In late March, Congressman Mike Thompson, D-Yolo, presented the city of Davis and Yolo County with a $850,000 check for the new Walnut Park Library project.
According to a city of Davis press release, Thompson secured this funding in the appropriations government funding bill that was signed into law on March 9, 2024.
"Congressman Thompson's appropriation just put us over the top," Provenza stated following the March 25 donation. "We will now be able to build a wonderful new library at Walnut Park in South Davis. The funds will also enable us to become compliant with clean energy requirements. We appreciate Congressman Thompson and President Biden for their work in obtaining funding for Yolo County libraries."
Spanning over 12,000 square feet at 2700 Lillard Drive, on parkland originally designated for a new library in 2002, the Walnut Park Library will offer amenities including a spacious community room, study areas, diverse collections for all age groups, computers and connectivity. Construction is scheduled to commence in winter 2024/2025, with completion expected by October 2026.
"The new library will be a valuable asset to our community, providing new opportunities for education, youth engagement, and professional growth," remarked Yolo County Librarian Diana Lopez. "The county is committed to ensuring that our residents have access to the finest available resources, and this project represents a significant step in that direction."
Residents are encouraged to attend the Walnut Park Library community engagement and information night to learn more about the project's progress and contribute to shaping its development.

"I am thrilled to have such strong support from the Board of Supervisors to build this state-of-the-art library. This library is an investment in our children, and it demonstrates the county's very strong commitment to both the Davis and greater Yolo County communities," added Yolo County's Chief Administrative Officer Gerardo Pinedo.
