At Marywood University, Conceptual Design and Thinking [ ART 221 ] is a required course for my illustration major. As I am concluding my freshman year at Marywood, I have came to the conclusion that it my favorite class so far!
What I love about this class is how I have the opportunity to create work with my medium of choice. Oftentimes for the projects, I generate my work digitally. I am more comfortable with the medium. Moreover, having this sense of comfort, it allows to shift my gears towards experimenting and learning more about the new concepts and ideas that are introduced in the class.
Anyways, among these new concepts and ideas is the GOLDEN MEAN.
Not to be confused with the philosophy, the Golden Mean Ratio is approximately 1.618, and it can be divided amongst itself evenly for infinity. What I found intriguing about this idea is ancient artists and architects utilized this principle in their designs. For example, the famous Colosseum in Rome was built with the ratio in mind. Moreover, not only do humans incorporate the ratio, but it is present in nature and was always apart of the world. Some nature examples include but not limited to: the spiral on a seashell, to the growth of leaves on a plant.
I was excited to incorporate this ratio in my armature assignment!
As you can see with the armature on the right the Deer Demon was constructed alongside the Golden Mean Ratio. Many aspects of the design; such as, fingers, antlers, back curvature, and head are aligned with the armature.
WRAP-UP:
Overall, this was a great learning experience. Not only did I learn about the Golden Mean; I also learned how the utilization of armatures can create a balanced, harmonious composition.
