LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary's County has released an updated Strategic Plan for Overdose Response, outlining new goals and ongoing efforts to tackle substance use and prevent overdose fatalities. The 2023 update, available on the St. Mary's County Health Department (SMCHD) website, builds on the progress made since previous editions in 2017 and 2019.
The plan is a collaborative effort involving various local entities including SMCHD, law enforcement, healthcare providers, educational institutions, emergency medical services (EMS), and fire rescue teams. These partners have unified their efforts to address the critical public health issue of drug overdoses and substance misuse within the community.
Central to the strategy are four primary objectives aimed at mitigating substance-related harms: preventing new cases of misuse, improving early identification and intervention, expanding access to treatment and recovery services, and enhancing the collection, sharing, and analysis of relevant data. These focus areas are designed to create a comprehensive approach to substance misuse that addresses the problem from multiple angles.
By improving prevention and early intervention strategies, the plan aims to reduce the incidence of substance misuse. Expanding access to necessary services ensures that individuals struggling with addiction receive timely and effective support. Moreover, enhancing data-driven practices aids in the ongoing assessment and refinement of response strategies, ensuring they remain effective and responsive to the evolving nature of substance misuse and overdose patterns in the county.
The updated Strategic Plan for Overdose Response will continue to evolve, incorporating new strategies and resources as they become available. This dynamic approach allows St. Mary's County to adapt to new challenges and opportunities in the fight against drug abuse and overdose.
SMCHD has expressed gratitude towards the numerous partner organizations and community members who have contributed to the development and implementation of the Overdose Response Plan. The plan is a testament to the county's commitment to public health and safety, reflecting a community-wide effort to prevent the tragic consequences of substance misuse.
