The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team saw their season end with a 15-5 loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 11.
RPI, ranked No. 2, asserted control early, taking a 4-0 lead with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter. St. Mary's junior attackman Aiden Doyle put the Seahawks on the board with a goal at 2:59, assisted by senior captain Johnny McGrain. However, the Engineers' Cooper Manzi quickly responded, restoring their four-goal advantage.
RPI extended their lead to 8-1 early in the second quarter with three consecutive goals. Doyle scored again for the Seahawks, assisted by Keegan Preis, ending RPI's run. Cooper Roman then added another goal for the Engineers. McGrain scored for St. Mary's late in the half, assisted by Doyle, but RPI led 9-3 at halftime.
The third quarter was dominated by RPI, who shut out St. Mary's and added five more goals to their tally, leading 14-3 by the end of the quarter. St. Mary's first-year player Declan Horton assisted sophomore Joshua Martel in scoring the first goal of the final quarter. Junior Nate Hochrein scored the Seahawks' final goal, with Manzi adding one last goal for RPI in the final minute.
