HARRISBURG, PA – In a high-scoring United East Conference Playoff game, the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team overcame the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions with a 17-10 victory on Thursday. This win keeps the Seahawks' playoff hopes alive as they progress in the tournament.
The game began with St. Mary's striking first when Chase O'Dell scored on a wild pitch after singling earlier in the inning. However, Penn State Abington quickly countered with a robust five-run inning, temporarily seizing the lead.
Not to be outdone, the Seahawks mounted a strong response in the second inning, scoring six runs. Layne Lesko and Derrick Booker notably contributed with an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk, respectively. The highlight of the inning was O'Dell's grand slam, pushing St. Mary's ahead with a 7-5 lead.
Penn State Abington continued to compete, adding a run in the bottom of the second, but St. Mary's widened the gap in the subsequent innings. Aaron Wathen and Trevor Smith each drove in runs in the fourth and fifth innings, while Cole Tarleton also contributed with an RBI double.
Despite Penn State Abington scoring in the fifth and sixth innings, St. Mary's maintained control. Further runs from Trevor Smith and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Cantazro in the seventh, along with another run in the eighth, solidified the Seahawks' position.
Penn State Abington managed one more run in the ninth inning, but it was not enough to overcome St. Mary's substantial lead. The Seahawks clinched the game 17-10.
Inside the box score, Trevor Smith and Chase O'Dell emerged as standout players for St. Mary's, each collecting multiple hits and RBIs. O'Dell finished with four hits and three RBIs, while Smith matched in hits and had multiple RBIs. Ian Walters and Aaron Wathen also contributed significantly with three hits each.
On the mound, Ryder Chalk pitched a solid eight innings for St. Mary's, despite allowing seven earned runs. He managed to strike out seven batters. Closer Willie Nelson also took the mound for an inning, allowing one run and striking out three.
Looking ahead, St. Mary's will face Lancaster Bible in Game 5 of the Volt Division on May 6th, as they continue to fight for a championship in the United East Conference Playoffs.
