BUCKINGHAM— The 29th annual Lake County Three Person Scramble Golf Championship was contested on Saturday at Buckingham Golf and Country Club and the end result was a runaway victory for the team that had one big theme in common. All of them played golf at Kelseyville High School.
Pete Wotherspoon (Class of 2010), Corey Huber (Class of 2012), and Matt Wotherspoon (Class of 2018) shot a -12 under par score of 60 to win the Three Person by an eye-popping five strokes. The KHS alum made 12 birdies throughout their round that featured identical -6 under par scores of 30 for nine holes. Amazingly the winning trio never made an eagle on any one of Buckingham's six par five holes. The Wotherspoon-Huber-Wotherspoon team posted birdies on two par threes (all on the front nine), five par fours, and five par fives. While the Kelseyville golf alum were obviously the pre-tournament favorites, they were able to deliver in a resounding way.
Wotherspoon played three years of varsity baseball and was an all-conference center fielder before leaving the diamond to play golf during his senior year. Huber played all four years of high school golf on a talented team that won the CMC South title twice. Huber was a two time all-conference golfer. He played college golf at Napa College and was a teaching professional at Napa Valley Country Club for two years. He has regained his amateur status. Matt Wotherspoon is a recent graduate of California State University San Bernardino. He was a four time all-conference golfer at Kelseyville High School, played two years of junior college golf at Cypress College, and was on the golf team at San Bernardino for his final two years of school.
The second lowest score of the day was recorded by the senior team of Juan Lopez, a golf coach at Clear Lake High School, Buckingham greens keeper Mike Patterson, and Kelseyville resident Tom Merriman. Lopez-Patterson-Merriman posted a -7 under par 65. They were the low senior team (aged 50 and above) in the Three Person. The trio of Todd Colbrandt of Middletown, Jesse Santana of Kelseyville, and Rick Easter of Lakeport finished runner-up with a score of -2 under par 70.
The net flight was a runaway as well for the team of Jon Lucich of Pacifica, Keanon Jardstrom of Clearlake, and Jim DeCristofaro, the superintendent of Adams Springs Golf Course. A tribute threesome formed in memory of the late Jack Lucich, a noted golf rules official who was the father of Jon, the grandfather of Keanon, and a former golf partner of DeCristofaro, they recorded a net score of 45 to win by seven strokes. The second place team included Dr. Bob Jolin of Lakeport, Cindy Forest of Kelseyville, and Mel O'Meara of Upper Lake. They shot a net 52. One stroke further back and tied for third place was the threesome of Darren Hostetler of Ukiah, Flip Fitch of Upper Lake, and Brian Castro of Upper Lake who came in with a 53. Alongside them in a third place tie was the team of Robert Evans of Kelseyville, Lauren Silva of Lakeport, and John Goostree of Buckingham. Reggie Osburn of Fortuna, Terry Norwood of Lakeport, and Jeff Frey of Eureka rounded out the top five in the net division with a 55
