BOWIE, M.D. — The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, ended their three-game losing streak with a narrow 2-1 victory against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium.
The Baysox (22-19) were stymied early by Richmond's starting left-hander John Michael Bertrand, who no-hit Bowie for the first six innings. Bertrand displayed dominant form, retiring ten consecutive batters at one point and striking out five while allowing just two walks.
Richmond (19-23) took an early lead in the third inning with a solo home run by Vaun Brown off Bowie's starting right-hander Seth Johnson. This homer was the only run Johnson conceded during his five-inning stint, which marked his longest outing of the season and his Double-A career. Johnson, the Orioles' No. 10 prospect, rebounded strongly after the homer, setting down the next nine batters he faced. He matched his season-high of six strikeouts while giving up only two hits and one walk, though he did not factor into the decision.
The Baysox finally broke through in the seventh inning. With two outs and Max Wagner on base, TT Bowens delivered a crucial double off Richmond reliever Evan Gates, bringing Wagner home and tying the game at one. Bowens' hit, which struck the bottom of the left-field wall, was his 24th RBI of the season, maintaining his position as the team leader in that category.
Bowie took the lead in the eighth inning. With Collin Burns on third base, Samuel Basallo, the Orioles' No. 2 prospect, grounded a two-strike pitch from Gates into right field, driving in Burns. This hit marked Basallo's second go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning this season.
The Baysox bullpen held firm to secure the win. Right-hander Dylan Heid (3-0) earned the victory with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Nick Richmond closed out the game in the ninth to notch his first save of the season.
The Baysox will continue their six-game series against the Flying Squirrels on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Bowie's right-hander Alex Pham (1-1, 5.29 ERA) is set to face Richmond's right-hander Carson Ragsdale (1-1, 3.03 ERA).
