The Woodland Joint Unified School District will hold its annual Reclassification, Biliteracy Pathway, and State Seal of Biliteracy Ceremony Monday, April 29, at 6 p.m. at the Woodland High School football stadium, located at 21 N. West St.
According to a local press release, the ceremony honors the hundreds of students who have made significant academic achievements toward becoming bilingual and bi-literate.
Reclassification
The district will recognize 305 students who were English Learners and have now demonstrated English competency, resulting in their reclassification as fluent English proficient. Students will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a medal. Students who meet reclassification criteria demonstrate that they can participate at an equal level with average native speakers in the regular instructional program. This is an important academic accomplishment for students who entered school with limited English proficiency.
Pathway to Biliteracy
The district will also recognize students who are on a pathway to biliteracy. These students have demonstrated progress toward proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish and English. There will be 102 students recognized districtwide with the current 8th-grade students joining in on the ceremony to receive a certificate of accomplishment and a medal.
State Seal of Biliteracy
Lastly, the district will present 152 State Seal of Biliteracy awards to seniors for their linguistic accomplishments; acknowledging their oral and written competency in at least two languages. This year's languages include Spanish, French, American Sign Language, Nepali, and Punjabi.
State Seal of Biliteracy recipients will also be honored with a medal and a sash commemorating their academic achievement, a State Seal on their high school diploma, and a transcript notation.
