LEONARDTOWN, MD — In a tragic event that has echoed through the community, Marcus Anthony Day, a 26-year-old resident of Leonardtown, was fatally shot on April 4, 2023. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Great Mills Sheetz in St. Mary's County. Shortly after the report of shots fired, Day was rushed to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, where he was pronounced dead.
Following an intensive investigation, detectives from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division made a significant breakthrough. On May 5, 2023, a 15-year-old male from Lexington Park was apprehended in King George County, VA, in connection with the murder. Due to Maryland law, the suspect's identity remains undisclosed pending a waiver hearing to decide the case's jurisdiction. He faces charges as an adult, including First-Degree Murder and several other related offenses.
In a separate development on April 1, 2024, Tavion Kelly Sommerville, 18, of Bushwood, MD, was arrested on charges related to Day's murder. Currently held at the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Sommerville's arrest adds another layer to the ongoing investigation into the homicide.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has extended its gratitude to the King George County Sheriff's Office for their assistance in the investigation. Additionally, the sheriff's office urges anyone with further information or evidence, such as cellphone videos or images from the scene, to come forward.
