Designated site for a future Olympic Village Elementary School (between Columbia Street and Hinge Park)
The Province has yet again announced plans for an elementary school to be built in Olympic Village.
What took so long? Is it real this time? Why was a school not ready for the fall of 2010? And why is 2029 the completion date now; could it not be built any sooner? Would it be better to wait for a building permit to be issued, to see crews starting excavation (with a construction office on site, etc.), before saying this school is really moving forward?
Here's a link to the full announcement by the Province. The press release states:
"The new school will have capacity for 630 students through more than $150 million from the Province. The four-storey school will include a neighbourhood learning centre that will have space for child care and a rooftop play area. The school is expected to be complete by fall 2029."
The City of Vancouver has agreed to provide the land under the terms of a 99-year lease.
The need for a school in Southeast False Creek has been noted many times during the formulation of the Official Development Plan for the area. How many planning chiefs have come and gone from the City since then, and how different terms of Councils and School Boards have there been since 2008?
Is the Province making the same mistake in the River District (East Fraserlands) as in Southeast False Creek, with no public school on the horizon?
