The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $1.09 billion for the upcoming Wednesday drawing, following another round without a grand prize winner. The drawn numbers—19, 24, 40, 42, 56 and the red Powerball 23—left players in suspense as the jackpot continues to grow, marking it as the fourth-largest in Powerball history and the ninth-largest in U.S. lottery history. This places the current jackpot just below the recent $1.128 billion Mega Millions jackpot claimed in New Jersey.
Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Lottery, emphasized the excitement surrounding consecutive weeks with jackpots exceeding $1 billion. Svitko reminded hopeful participants that purchasing a ticket not only offers a chance at the jackpot but also supports various good causes within their state. He advised, "Have fun and good luck!"
Despite no winners for the jackpot in Monday's drawing, over 2.1 million tickets still won cash prizes. Among these, six tickets matched five white balls, earning $1 million each in Florida, Maryland (two winners), Minnesota, North Carolina, and Virginia. Additionally, several tickets won significant prizes, with 53 securing $50,000 and 11 winning $100,000.
The jackpot has eluded players since January 1, 2024, with a ticket from Michigan capturing an $842.4 million prize. Since that win, the jackpot has not been claimed in 39 consecutive drawings.
The upcoming drawing offers the winner a choice between an annuitized payment estimated at $1.09 billion or a lump sum of approximately $527.3 million before taxes. The annuity option includes a single immediate payment followed by 29 annual increments, increasing by 5% each year.
Powerball tickets are available for $2 in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With more than half of the ticket sales revenue staying within the selling jurisdiction, the lottery supports various local causes. Drawings are held thrice weekly and broadcast from Tallahassee, Florida.
The odds of winning any prize stand at 1 in 24.9, with the jackpot odds at 1 in 292.2 million.
In Maryland, the lottery excitement extends beyond Powerball. A player from Belcamp recently won $2.1 million in the Multi-Match game, and several other significant wins were reported across the state in both Powerball and Mega Millions games. The recent resetting of the Mega Millions jackpot to $36 million following a New Jersey win contrasts with the steadily growing Powerball prize.
Maryland Lottery winners have claimed prizes totaling over $34.1 million in the past week, highlighting the impact and excitement of lottery games in the community.
