James Stephen Gass Jr., a 32-year-old resident of Marbury
LA PLATA, MD—In a recent ruling by the Charles County Circuit Court, James Stephen Gass, Jr., a 32-year-old Leonardtown resident, has been sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison across two separate cases. State's Attorney Tony Covington confirmed that Judge Monise A. Brown handed down the sentence on Friday, March 22, 2024, marking a significant legal outcome for the crimes committed against four juveniles and for illegal firearm possession.
The court's decision comes after Gass pleaded guilty on December 1, 2023, to first-degree assault involving four juveniles and the unlawful use of a firearm during the commission of that assault, resulting in a 9-year prison sentence.
Additionally, Gass faced a 5-year sentence for possessing a firearm illegally, a direct violation stemming from a prior felony conviction. Post-release, Gass is mandated to undergo five years of supervised probation.
The charges against Gass were a result of a disturbing incident on June 6, 2023. Reports indicated that Gass, driving a white Ford Crown Victoria, threatened four juvenile cyclists with a long gun while employing racial epithets. The confrontation occurred in the vicinity of Chicamuxen Road and Mason Springs Road. Authorities were alerted to the situation when one of the juveniles reported the threats.
Subsequent investigation efforts led to the discovery of Gass' vehicle outside a Dollar General on Bicknell Road. When approached by an officer, Gass fled, instigating a high-speed chase. It was established during the investigation that Gass, being a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms, further compounding the gravity of his actions.
