In a notable case that has gripped the community of Prince Frederick, Maryland, Anthony Hill, a 28-year-old man from Washington, D.C., has entered a guilty plea for the shooting death of Dakarai N. Milburn. The incident, which occurred in the quiet Yardley Hills subdivision on August 1, 2023, led to Hill facing charges of second-degree murder, use of a handgun in a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a regulated firearm. The plea was entered on March 28, 2024, in Calvert County Circuit Court, marking a significant development in a case that has brought sorrow and calls for justice from the local community.
According to court records, the tragedy unfolded on a summer afternoon when Calvert County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 1600 block of Mint Court in Prince Frederick following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered 23-year-old Dakarai Nivek Milburn with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate efforts to save his life, Milburn was pronounced dead at the scene. The swift response of law enforcement led to the rapid apprehension of Hill, who was found in possession of a handgun.
Senior Assistant State's Attorney Lee Ann Bell and Assistant State's Attorney Allison Walton led the prosecution, presenting evidence that Hill's actions on that fateful day were not only fatal but also in direct violation of Maryland's strict firearms laws. The guilty plea brings a measure of closure to a case that has highlighted issues of gun violence and public safety in the community.
Hill is now awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for July 1, 2024, before Judge Mark S. Chandlee. With a potential maximum sentence of 75 years, including at least five years without the possibility of parole, the gravity of Hill's actions and their consequences are underscored. The legal proceedings reflect the serious approach taken by Maryland's judicial system towards gun violence and the unlawful use of firearms.
The incident, described by authorities as an isolated event, nonetheless raises broader questions about community safety and the impact of gun violence on families and neighborhoods. As the community of Prince Frederick and the family of Dakarai N. Milburn await the final sentencing, there is a collective hope for justice and a renewed commitment to addressing the challenges posed by firearm-related crimes.
