Daily writing prompt
How would you improve your community?
That is a difficult question or concept to get a solid grasp on I think for the most part in all areas. For any question of this magnitude and thus potential impact on a community, there are so many layers of complexity to research and examine to address the needs of the area where you may live.
Everything from employment opportunities, housing, tourism, economic development and just continuing from those four mentioned, the list could be quite lengthy.
But to answer the prompt, if there was one of many improvements our town and community would benefit from would be far better medical care and services.
This issue is not unique to where I live. The lack of suitable medical care and services is epidemic across this province and unfortunately across the country.
Although I'm of "retirement age", I don't necessarily have many complex(or any complex) medical needs for that matter, as many folks who get older unfortunately do. Having said that, getting blood work done or having some sort of routine medical checkup to monitor these minor issues(although type 2 diabetes isn't necessarily minor) is for the most part virtually impossible.
We are on the provincial waitlist for a family Doctor. There are somewhere 100,000 people in front of us on that list. That's right ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND.
The nearest walk-in clinic is an hour away. If you want to use any walk-in clinic you need to be there an hour before they open. Visiting an emergency department at any hospital may involve a wait of up to ten hours or more.
If I could do one thing to improve our community, it would involve a massive upgrade to medical care and medical services.
