Over the last eight years, Ray Sandoval has played a pivotal role in shaping Woodland Community College, contributing significantly to its development from the ground up.
Recognized for his exceptional dedication and expertise, Sandoval is set to receive the Eagles of Excellence Award. As a classified employee specializing in grounds maintenance at the East Gibson Road campus, his meticulous care of everything from the lush lawns to the vibrant rose garden ensures that the campus remains a beautiful and inviting environment for everyone who visits.
"Sandoval is the embodiment of what the Eagles of Excellence Award stands for," stated Brian Splaine in his nomination letter. "Ray has been working for Woodland Community College, under the Yuba Community College District, since Aug 17, 2015. In these eight years, Ray has laid the foundation to which the WCC mission and values stand upon."
As a vital grounds maintenance professional, "Ray ensures that our most important assets, students and faculty, are able to 'achieve their career and educational goals' by way of preserving a safe and secure campus, and thereby enriching our local community's future."
Sandoval's exceptional work ethic and positive attitude towards the college have earned him high praise from the school's Fund Committee, the body responsible for making these prestigious selections.
The recognitional ceremony for Sandoval as well as other nominees starts with a reception at 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, in the new Performing Arts and Culinary building at the college, 2300 E. Other award winners for 2024 include adjunct faculty members Paul Dilley and James Schulte, alumni Christina Thomas and community member Elyse Doyle-Martinez.
Splaine reported that among Sandoval's distinguished accomplishments are his efforts to drive a "zero-scape" initiative by throughout three Woodland College campuses that include Lake and Colusa counties, reducing watering zones by 10%.
In addition to his role in grounds maintenance, Sandoval has been an active participant in Woodland Community College's Upward Bound program. Collaborating closely with the agriculture department, he has spearheaded initiatives to enhance the campus's aesthetic appeal, guiding 10th through 12th-grade students in tasks ranging from clearing debris to weeding and tree maintenance.
Furthermore, Sandoval has been an integral part of campus activities, including commencement ceremonies and events held in Building 800, which, until recently, served as the venue for meetings and banquets. His multifaceted involvement underscores his commitment to fostering a vibrant and welcoming campus community.
Throughout his eight years at the college, he has become a staple at Commencement Ceremonies where he not only assists with set up but invigorates the atmosphere with his positive energy. Those who interact with Sandoval, praise his calm and helpful demeanor and willingness to step up wherever needed.
Finally, Sandoval was involved in planning the landscaping for Woodland College's new 43,000-square-foot Performing Arts and Culinary Center.
"Sandoval's dedication to excellence and passion for Woodland Community College's faculty and students is abundantly clear each day," stated Splaine. "His efforts fully exemplify the mission and vision of Yuba Community College District by achieving a high-quality and safe learning environment for all students."
