In a compelling display of skill and teamwork, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team secured a decisive 24-3 victory over Cairn University, marking their fourth 20-goal game of the season and advancing their United East Conference record to 2-0. The match, held in St. Mary's City, saw a dominant performance from the Seahawks, with 14 players scoring goals against the Cairn Highlanders.
From the start, St. Mary's College showcased their offensive prowess. The first half of the game was particularly one-sided, with the Seahawks securing a 16-0 lead by halftime. The offensive onslaught began with Joshua Martel and Declan Horton, both contributing three goals each in the first quarter. The team's momentum continued into the second quarter, with seven different Seahawks adding to the scoreboard.
Cairn University struggled to find their footing but managed to score their first goal in the third quarter, courtesy of Cole Heffler. However, St. Mary's quickly responded, with Liam McNulty scoring back-to-back goals, further solidifying the Seahawks' lead. The game also faced a brief interruption due to a tornado warning, but upon resumption, St. Mary's College continued to dominate, concluding with a 24-3 victory.
The statistics highlight the Seahawks' control over the game, with a 48-14 shot advantage and a 48-18 margin in ground balls. Special teams also excelled, with the Seahawks converting all their extra-man opportunities. Matteo Ciccarello and Bryce Howard were particularly effective in face-offs, setting the stage for many of the Seahawks' scoring opportunities.
Individual performances were key to St. Mary's success. Joshua Martel's career-best six goals and a total of seven points were a highlight, alongside Declan Horton's five-point game. Contributions came from across the team, with players like Keegan Preis and Quinn McLaughlin also reaching personal bests in points scored.
Despite the loss, Cairn University had some standout performances, with Jonathan Balsamo leading his team in scoring and Nico Cione making significant contributions as goalkeeper. The game marks Cairn's third consecutive loss, highlighting areas for improvement as they continue their season.
Looking forward, St. Mary's College is set to face Bryn Athyn on April 6th at JLR Stadium in St. Mary's City, Maryland. The game will also serve as Military Appreciation Day, celebrating the contributions of service members and their families.
