Waldorf, MD – Maryland residents are gearing up for a remarkable celestial event on Monday, April 8, as a partial solar eclipse promises to dim the afternoon sky with about 90% coverage of the sun by the moon. The event is expected to unfold between 2:00 and 4:30 p.m., reaching its peak at approximately 3:20 p.m., transforming day into a brief twilight.
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has announced that schools will operate on a normal schedule despite the timing of the eclipse coinciding with student dismissal times. Outdoor activities, aside from dismissals, will be postponed until after 4:30 p.m. to ensure the safety of students and staff during the eclipse.
In anticipation of this cosmic spectacle, the James E. Richmond Science Center in Waldorf is hosting "Our Sky Today," a free eclipse viewing event. The event is scheduled from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. and will feature viewing stations for attendees to safely enjoy the eclipse. Event parking is provided at the St. Charles High School gymnasium/poolside entrance.
The Science Center is not only offering an outdoor viewing experience but also an informational program within its planetarium, designed to educate visitors about the solar eclipse. However, space is limited to 170 guests, indicating potential for a full house given the event's unique nature.
To enhance the viewing experience, ISO-certified eclipse glasses are available for purchase at the Science Center for $4, though supplies are limited. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP for the event through the Science Center's website, though it's noted that the RSVP does not include eclipse glasses.
The importance of safety during this event is being emphasized, with the Science Center and NASA providing critical viewing guidelines. Direct observation of the sun, except during the totality phase of a total solar eclipse, can be harmful without proper eye protection. ISO-certified glasses, recommended by the American Astronomical Society (AAS), are deemed necessary for safe viewing. Additionally, NASA is offering a livestream for those who wish to observe the eclipse virtually, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to witness this phenomenon safely.
As Maryland prepares for this rare event, the community is reminded of the importance of following all recommended safety protocols to ensure a memorable and safe eclipse viewing experience.
