CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – In a striking display of skill and teamwork, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team secured a commanding 20-1 victory against Wilson College on Saturday, marking their third consecutive win this season. The match, part of the United East Conference, saw senior attacker Bella Dunigan lead her team with a stellar six-point performance, contributing three goals and three assists.
From the onset, the Seahawks demonstrated their superiority, establishing a 12-0 lead by the second quarter. This early dominance featured goals from eight different players, underscoring the depth and versatility of the St. Mary's team. Dunigan, along with junior attacker Ella Baynes and junior midfielder Madison Laine, were pivotal in this early surge, each adding significantly to the scoreboard.
Wilson College managed to score a solitary goal before halftime, courtesy of Emily Young, but the Seahawks' momentum was unstoppable. The second half saw St. Mary's College further their lead with an 8-0 run, with notable performances from sophomore attacker Katelin Scala and senior captain MC Mortimer.
Statistically, the Seahawks overshadowed Wilson in every aspect of the game. They led with a 39-7 shot margin and a 22-8 advantage in ground balls. Senior captain Rachael Freeman notably excelled in defense for St. Mary's, showcasing her skill with six loose ball pickups.
The game also highlighted St. Mary's superiority in draw controls and showcased their disciplined play, with Wilson failing to capitalize on free-position shots and struggling with turnovers.
Wilson College's efforts were led by Jill Ahlgren, who showed resilience in defense with significant contributions in ground balls, draw controls, and caused turnovers. Goalkeepers Krystal Kienast and Kaelyn Goff also made commendable efforts, despite the overwhelming pressure from St. Mary's attackers.
Looking ahead, St. Mary's College is set to face Notre Dame (Md.) on April 9 and the Scottish National Team on April 12, both matches to be held at JLR Stadium in St. Mary's City, Md. These upcoming games offer the Seahawks an opportunity to extend their winning streak and continue showcasing their strength in the United East Conference.
