RICHMOND, VA — The Bowie Baysox faced a challenging defeat in the series opener against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, concluding the game with a 6-2 loss at The Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.
The game started on an even keel until the third inning when Richmond, holding an 8-8 record, surged ahead. The inning saw Bowie's right-hander Seth Johnson struggle on the mound, ultimately leaving the game early. Richmond's Victor Bericoto hit a crucial single, bringing in a run and extending the lead to 2-0. The inning spiraled further for Bowie due to a costly fielding error by Frederick Bencosme, leading to another run for Richmond. This sequence knocked Johnson out of the game, who concluded his appearance with five runs allowed over 2.1 innings, only two of which were earned.
The Flying Squirrels capitalized further with Luis Toribio delivering a two-run single, broadening the gap to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Johnson's outing ended with him having given up five hits and three walks, alongside striking out two batters.
The Baysox offense finally ignited in the fifth inning, thanks to John Rhodes who hit a two-run homer off Richmond's Carson Ragsdale. This marked Rhodes' first home run of the season, and it brought the score to 5-2. Despite this effort, Bowie struggled to maintain momentum, ultimately failing to capitalize further with a 0-for-7 record with runners in scoring position.
Richmond's bullpen held strong with Wil Jensen claiming the win after two scoreless innings, marking his record at 1-1. This victory for Richmond ended a three-game winning streak for Bowie, who now stands at 9-7 for the season.
Looking ahead, the Baysox will attempt to reclaim their stride in the remaining games of this six-game series against the Flying Squirrels. The next game is scheduled for 6:35 PM tomorrow, with Bowie's Alex Pham slated to pitch against Richmond's Ryan Murphy.
