There are lightweight, windbreaker vests, then there are softshell vests that offer added warmth and a healthy dose of protection. I'm a vest aficionado. I find them to provide just the right touch of warmth and protection in a pinch or under the right conditions. The construction of the Signature Softshell Vest is unique, with the use of eVent fabrics up front and thermal fleece on the backside. Without question, eVent is one of the best waterproof/breathable materials on the market, but I have yet to see it used in a cycling vest. Of course, Velocio has executed the fabric combination in a way only they can, but let's double-tap on this one for a bit.
Slipping it on, you'll quickly get the racing vibe. I'm a solid medium across the Velocio lineup, but this one is snug. With a form-fitting design, it wears like a race jersey, but has more utility. I love the 2-way zipper for easy access to under layers and the front zippered chest pocket does add some utility, but is largely unnecessary given the vest features three pleated rear pockets. Those pockets are protected from the elements due to the use of eVent fabric.
Zipping it up, the collar height and diameter is spot-on for proper coverage without getting in the way. Fully-zipped it seals out the elements and the fleece lining feels cozy and warm. Wrapping things up, the sleeve cuffs are cut tight to ensure the best weather protection around the shoulders.
As you can see, the combination of the Signature Softshell Vest and Signature Long Sleeve Jersey (both in Fire Red) is a great way to go. Another great combo is the Concept Merino Long Sleeve, if temperatures are a little warmer. Either way, the vest remains snug and delivers protection and thermal warmth.
Those jersey pockets are outstanding and are something of a rarity with vests as most don't include them. I have loaded up all three pockets with various layers, just in case. After all, when it's vest weather, it's unpredictable, so stashing a windbreaker has been my go-to just in case. Items are easy to stash and retrieve -- even though the pockets sit a touch higher than usual.
For added breathability, the back panel is midweight thermal fleece. It stretches with you and wicks away moisture like a sieve.
The biggest issue I've found with the Signature Softshell Vest is the lack of stretch on the front panels. eVent, while waterproof/breathable, does not feature a whole lot of stretch. In fact, it really doesn't stretch at all. On one of my first rides, I was ascending American Fork Canyon -- pushing hard. As my output increased, so did my need for deep breaths to maintain power. I honestly felt claustrophobic as I tried and tried to take deep breaths. While I like the slim fit of this vest, the eVent face fabric doesn't offer enough stretch. Because of that, I would recommend sizing up.
Fit: I'm 5'11" and 175 lbs. wearing the size medium (my usual Velocio size).
