Daily writing prompt
How has technology changed your job?
I retired back in the summer of 2022.
Although I hadn't planned on retiring then, the opportunity to do so from a "dollars and cents" perspective turned it into very much an instant reality.
Having said that, technology hasn't had any effect or influence on my job called retirement in much of a significant way.
Now, I do think that the internet; instant access to information; and social and online media do shape our day-to-day existence. Disinformation and misinformation cloud or blur the line between what is real and truthful and what is not.
Long gone are the days of reading one or two upstanding world-class newspapers over the weekend, and then forming your own opinion on something. Now "opinions" flow and force-feed the public disguised as truth from every direction. They come at society faster than bar shots and shooters from a honky-tonk bar on a Saturday night.
Wading through the massive volume of oftentimes "the sewage flow of news" spewing forth as "this is the truth" becomes mixed and muddied with truth and reality(even if the truth isn't pleasant) and becomes at times virtually an impossible task to desire truth/fact from disinformation.
"Retirement as a job or profession" has provided ample opportunity to pursue more in-depth reading; viewing and listening and hence examination of current events, not just in Canada, but across the face of the entire planet. Slowly it is becoming an unfortunate conclusion, that the general populous(you and me) are akin to the puppets on a string that are manipulated to dance and move(to believe and react) based on the orchestrations of gigantic puppet masters.
So in a way, technology has changed my job - "my retirement profession." It has made the job of discerning truth and fact from fiction and disinformation, so much more challenging, difficult and at times almost impossible.
