GRANTHAM, Pa. – In an electrifying upset, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team clinched a 13-10 victory against No. 25 Messiah University this Saturday afternoon. The win marks the Seahawks' third consecutive triumph, elevating their season record to 3-2, while the Falcons struggle with a 0-4 start.
Junior captain Colin Horton spearheaded the Seahawks' attack, delivering a career-high six points in a game that saw the team outmaneuver Messiah on their home turf. Horton's performance, complemented by strategic plays from her teammates, underscored St. Mary's resilience and tactical prowess.
The match kicked off with St. Mary's establishing an early lead, courtesy of goals by Horton and sophomore attacker Katelin Scala, setting a 2-0 score by the end of the first period. Despite Messiah's efforts to narrow the gap early in the second quarter, the Seahawks responded fiercely, extending their lead to 6-1.
Messiah attempted a comeback, cutting the lead to two scores before halftime and further reducing the deficit to a single goal early in the third quarter. However, undeterred St. Mary's launched a 5-1 run, reclaiming a five-goal lead that they managed to sustain until the game's final moments.
Horton's back-to-back unassisted goals, including a notable woman-down goal, were pivotal in securing the Seahawks' victory despite a late surge from Messiah. St. Mary's defense, led by first-year goalie Allie Greeley's career-high 15 saves, held firm, sealing the win.
The match was intensely contested, as reflected in the 17 green and yellow cards issued. Despite being outshot by Messiah, St. Mary's demonstrated superior control in ground ball retrievals, with senior captain Rachael Freeman leading the charge.
This victory served as redemption for the Seahawks, avenging last season's loss to Messiah in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament First Round. Horton's remarkable six-point haul and significant contributions from Betch, Scala, and Greeley highlighted the team's cohesive performance and individual brilliance.
Messiah's effort was led by Kaite Bukiewicz, who made a notable impact with three goals and a robust defensive play. However, it wasn't enough to counter St. Mary's strategic execution and determination.
Looking ahead, the Seahawks aim to maintain their winning streak against Capital on March 6th, a matchup that promises to test their resilience and skill as they continue their season journey. The team's performance against Messiah signals their potential for a successful season and establishes them as formidable competitors in collegiate women's lacrosse.
