INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – St. Mary's College of Maryland will be well-represented at the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships in Greensboro, N.C., with junior Luke Schwenk and first-year Kelsie Miller among the 526 athletes chosen to compete from March 20-23 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Luke Schwenk, hailing from Annapolis, Md., will mark his second consecutive appearance at the national championships, a feat that highlights his exceptional performance as a Seahawk. Last year, Schwenk etched his name in St. Mary's history books by being the first male swimmer from the institution to qualify for the NCAA Championships. His journey was adorned with two All-America awards, underscoring his prowess and determination in the pool. The 6-foot-2 captain will compete in the 50, 100 freestyle, and 100 backstroke events, carrying forward his remarkable legacy. Schwenk boasts impressive times, including the fourth-fastest in the 50 freestyle and 11th in the 100 freestyle on the national stage, making him a swimmer to watch.
On the women's side, Kelsie Miller, a promising talent from Potomac, Md., is set to debut at the championships. Her qualification in the 100 butterfly signals a bright future, making her the ninth woman from St. Mary's College to compete at this level and the first since Kelly Heyde in 2012. Miller's impressive time in the 100 butterfly ranks her eighth nationally, and her selection allows her to participate in two events of her choosing, further showcasing her versatility and skill.
The event schedule includes 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley on the opening day, followed by the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 100 freestyle on the subsequent days. These competitions promise to be a thrilling display of talent and dedication from seasoned and emerging athletes.
The NCAA Championships are a testament to these athletes' hard work and commitment and a pivotal moment in their careers. Schwenk's return to the championships and his previous accolades position him as a seasoned contender. At the same time, Miller's debut is a fresh and exciting addition to the roster of talented swimmers.
Their participation is a source of pride for St. Mary's College, reflecting the institution's commitment to excellence in athletics and the development of its students both in and out of the pool. The community eagerly anticipates their performance, supporting their journey on the national stage.
As the championships approach, all eyes will be on Greensboro, where these athletes will strive for personal best and aim to leave a mark on the national level.
