St. Mary's City, MD—In a challenging face-off, the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team fell 8-1 to the RPI Engineers in a single game showdown. The defeat pushed the Seahawks' season record to 2-4, while RPI marked their first win of the season, starting off strong at 1-0.
The game commenced with the Engineers quickly setting the pace, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Despite efforts by St. Mary's George Berbakos and Cole Tarleton, who each singled in the bottom of the first, the Seahawks struggled to capitalize on these early opportunities, leaving both players stranded.
Berbakos showcased his skill again with another single, stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out by Tarleton. However, the Seahawks were unable to convert this into a run. Similarly, Derrick Booker's one-out triple in the bottom of the fourth ended with him stranded, highlighting the team's difficulties in seizing scoring chances.
RPI extended their lead by adding a sixth run in the top of the fifth inning. St. Mary's, on the other hand, managed to score their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Layne Lesko crossed home plate following a ground out by Chase O'Dell.
The Engineers further solidified their lead with two additional runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Seahawks attempted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth as Booker advanced to third on a wild pitch. Despite this effort, and a single by Trevor Smith that moved Booker to second, the inning ended without further scoring from St. Mary's.
From within the box score, George Berbakos emerged as a standout player for the Seahawks, finishing the game with three hits. Chase O'Dell contributed the team's sole RBI. On the mound, Ryder Chalk pitched for four and two-thirds innings, facing 23 batters and surrendering four earned runs while striking out three. Relief appearances from Quinton Maris, Willie Nelson, and Nick Russo rounded out the pitching efforts for the Seahawks.
The loss underscores areas for improvement for St. Mary's as they look ahead to their next match. The Seahawks are scheduled to face York (PA) in a doubleheader on March 9th, with games at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM in St. Mary's City, MD. The team remains hopeful for a turnaround, seeking to leverage the lessons learned from this defeat to strengthen their performance in upcoming contests.
