ST. MARY'S CITY, MD—In their first home game of the season, St. Mary's College of Maryland's baseball team notched a win against the Vermont State Lyndon Hornets with a final score of 4-2. The victory at home pushed the Seahawks' early season record to 2-3, while the Hornets are still searching for their first win, now standing at 0-4.
The game unfolded with St. Mary's taking the lead in the opening inning, a lead they would never relinquish. Chase O'Dell's critical single allowed George Berbakos to advance to third, setting the stage for the game's first run. This early momentum was crucial for the Seahawks as they extended their lead in the following inning. The team showcased their batting prowess with three consecutive singles, capitalizing on a Hornets' error to make it 2-0.
The Hornets managed to narrow the gap in the fourth inning, marking their first run and hit of the day, but their efforts to turn the game around were consistently thwarted by St. Mary's strategic plays. Cole Tarleton's seventh-inning triple followed by Gavin Wathen's sacrifice fly extended the Seahawks' lead. George Berbakos and Chase O'Dell replicated this successful formula in the eighth inning, further securing the Seahawks' lead at 4-1.
Despite a late run by the Hornets in the ninth inning, St. Mary's defense held strong, ensuring a 4-2 victory. Inside the box score, Trevor Smith and Ian Walters stood out with two hits each, contributing significantly to the team's success. Chase O'Dell and Gavin Wathen were credited with the game's RBIs, highlighting their pivotal roles in the Seahawks' scoring efforts.
On the mound, Tommy Brill's performance was a key factor in the Seahawks' victory. Brill pitched seven innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out eight batters, showcasing his dominance and control. Austin Ferreira came in to close the game, securing his first save of the season and sealing the win for St. Mary's.
The Seahawks are looking ahead to their next challenge, a doubleheader against RPI scheduled for March 3rd. The games, set to take place at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM in St. Mary's City, MD, offer the team an opportunity to build on their recent success and continue their pursuit of a winning season.
