LATHAM, N.Y. – In a recent announcement by the United East Conference, Rachael Freeman of St. Mary's College, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, has been named the Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for her outstanding performances. The senior captain's contributions were pivotal in the Seahawks' games this past week, showcasing her skills in a split of contests.
St. Mary's College, engaging in a challenging week of play, emerged with a 1-1 record. The Seahawks faced a tough battle on the road against Christopher Newport University, ranked 18th nationally, succumbing with a score of 20-8 on March 20. However, they rebounded with a decisive 21-7 victory in their conference opener against Bryn Athyn College on March 23. Freeman's exceptional defensive play was instrumental in this turnaround, accumulating nine ground balls, seven draw controls, four caused turnovers, and even contributing an assist over the two games.
Freeman's week was highlighted by notable individual performances in both matches. Against Christopher Newport, she secured four ground balls, caused three turnovers—a season-best—and gained two draw controls. In the triumph over Bryn Athyn, Freeman not only set a personal record with five draw controls but also matched her season-high with five ground balls, and recorded her first career assist. The defender, standing at 5-2, also celebrated a personal milestone by collecting her 150th career ground ball in the win.
Currently, Freeman stands as a prominent figure in the United East Conference, ranking second with a total of 39 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers for the season. Her contributions on the field reflect not only her personal dedication and skill but also her vital role in St. Mary's defensive strategies.
Looking ahead, the Seahawks (5-5, 1-0 UEC) are preparing for their next challenge. They will travel to Allentown, Pennsylvania, to face Cedar Crest College (3-1, 0-0 UEC) in another conference game. Scheduled for Saturday, March 30, at 2 pm, the match promises to be another opportunity for Freeman and her team to showcase their prowess and continue their pursuit of success in the United East Conference.
