The Powerball jackpot is surging, now standing at an estimated $800 million for Monday's drawing, positioning it as the sixth-largest in the game's illustrious history. With an estimated cash value of $384.8 million, this jackpot is drawing significant attention from hopeful participants nationwide.
In the most recent drawing, no ticket matched all six numbers (white balls 6, 23, 25, 34, 51, and the red Powerball 3), prompting the jackpot to roll over. The Power Play multiplier was set at 2X for this draw.
While the jackpot remained elusive, the draw was fruitful for over 1.9 million ticket holders who secured cash prizes last Saturday. Notably, five tickets matched the five white balls, earning $1 million each. These winning tickets were distributed across California, Florida, Indiana, Texas, and Washington. It's important to note that in California, the payout amounts are pari-mutuel, depending on sales and the number of winners.
The drawing also saw 38 tickets win $50,000 each, alongside 14 tickets that secured $100,000 prizes. Additionally, a Double Play drawing yielded a $500,000 prize for a ticket in Colorado, matching all five black balls (18, 24, 43, 46, 47) and the Powerball 11. The Double Play feature, which offers an additional chance to win with a top prize of $10 million, is available for an extra $1 per play in select jurisdictions.
As anticipation builds for Monday's drawing, the potential jackpot winner faces a choice between an annuitized payout of $800 million or a lump sum of approximately $384.8 million, with both options subject to taxes. The annuity option would include an immediate payment followed by 29 annual increments, each increasing by 5 percent.
This marks the second time this year the Powerball jackpot has reached the $800 million threshold. The last jackpot win occurred on January 1, 2024, with a Michigan ticket claiming $842.4 million. Since that win, there have been 35 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, making Monday's draw the 36th attempt to find the next big winner.
Powerball tickets, available for $2 each, are sold across 45 states, as well as in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held thrice weekly and broadcast from Tallahassee, Florida, with live streaming available on Powerball.com. The odds of winning any prize stand at 1 in 24.9, with the jackpot odds at approximately 1 in 292.2 million.
