Dakarai Amon Mason, 18, of Lexington Park
LEONARDTOWN, MD – In the early hours of March 2, 2024, a shooting incident in Lexington Park, Maryland, led to the arrest of an 18-year-old after he sustained a gunshot wound. St. Mary's County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene at the 21800 block of Ronald Drive around 2:10 a.m., where they found Dakarai Amon Mason, a resident of Lexington Park, with a non-life-threatening injury to his leg.
Mason was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Following this, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division took over the investigation, uncovering video evidence of Mason firing a gun at a vehicle. The young man then attempted to flee the scene and hide the weapon, which deputies later recovered. It was also discovered that Mason is legally prohibited from possessing regulated firearms.
After his medical treatment, Mason faced arrest and subsequent charges, including reckless endangerment, carrying a handgun on his person, possessing a loaded handgun, and the illegal possession of a regulated firearm by a minor. He was then transported to the Adult Detention and Rehabilitation Center to await further proceedings.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the investigation into the shooting is still active and ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information regarding the incident to come forward and contact Detective Allison Mattera. Detective Mattera can be reached at her email, Allison.Mattera@stmaryscountymd.gov, or by telephone at 301-475-4200, extension 8124, to assist in the ongoing investigation.
This incident adds to the growing concerns about gun violence and the involvement of young individuals in such crimes. The quick response of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the subsequent investigation underscore the law enforcement community's commitment to addressing and mitigating gun-related offenses. The arrest of Dakarai Amon Mason not only highlights the challenges faced by communities in curbing youth violence but also demonstrates the effectiveness of surveillance and detective work in bringing alleged perpetrators to justice.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has not released further details about the motive behind the shooting or whether additional suspects are being sought. However, the recovery of the firearm and the charges laid against Mason suggest a serious breach of law, particularly concerning the illegal possession of weapons by minors. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the role of citizens in assisting law enforcement agencies through information sharing.
