Woodland Community College will "Let the Show Begin" when it features five people who have made significant contributions to the school and Yolo County in April.
The theme of this year's Eagles of Excellence Awards, "Let the Show Begin," was selected by the school's Fund Committee and pays homage to the changes now underway there.
Earlier this year, Dr. Lizette Navarette took over as college president after a yearlong search by trustees of the Yuba Community College District. Also in January, the new $43 million Performing Arts Center and Culinary Institute was dedicated after just over a year of construction.
And in late 2023, the Woodland College Soccer team was crowned Bay Valley Champions in its first season of play.
Navarette is also making progress on reaching out to involve more people in Woodland and Yolo County who want to see students, staff and faculty succeed.
Specifically, the Eagles of Excellence awards will be the first opportunity for the Yolo County public to see the inside of the Performing Arts Center and Culinary Institute, paid for by their tax dollars.
The 35,300-square-foot facility on the eastern edge of the Gibson Road campus was dedicated in January.
The Eagles of Excellence ceremony takes place starting at 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, and features "heavy hors d'oeuvres" at tables and settings spaced throughout the facility, including the 450-seat theater, where the honorees will be feted, according to a spokesman for the Fund Committee, which hosts the event to raise money for students in need, scholarships as well as instructional program.
Tickets to the celebration are now available and can be purchased at https://wcc.yccd.edu/about/foundation/ for $50 per person.
Being honored at the awards ceremony are five individuals for their contributions to the Woodland and Yolo County communities as well as the college itself. The recipients were nominated by college faculty, staff and students and selected by the College's Fund Committee.
Those to be recognized include classified employee Ray Sandoval, who is in charge of the grounds crew; Elyse Doyle-Martinez, a mural artist and college alumni; alumni Christina Thomas, who has supported a variety of campus programs, including the Foster Kinship Care Education Program; retired faculty members Paul Dilley and Jim Schulte, who have taught English Speakers of other Languages; and agriculture respectively.
In addition to the theater, the complex houses classroom spaces to expand theatre arts, music, 2D arts, agriculture and culinary services, including a complete kitchen with freezer and refrigerator spaces.
But people can also become sponsors of the event itself by contributing in one of four levels such as the "Golden Eagle Society" for $7,000; "Soaring Eagles," for $3,000; an "American Eagles" sponsorship for $1,000; and a "Friends of Woodland Community College" sponsorship.
Each sponsorship includes a number of tickets to the event as well as prominent listings in online announcements, the event brochure and other recognition during the actual program.
People can contact Carid Servin at cservin@yccd.edu to make arrangements as a sponsor or to purchase tickets if needed.
Those attending the ceremony will also be able to participate in a silent auction, featuring a number of college offerings, including a private dinner prepared by culinary students, front-row tickets to upcoming performances, a student painting, and other items.
Additionally, people can also help students in the silent auction by "adopting" a student for an emergency grant, buying a class unit for a student, buying a soccer player their cleats, buying a culinary student their uniform, sponsoring a student's paint sets or sponsoring the purchase of student books. Other opportunities may include music lessons, wine baskets or agriculture produce.
