Dominika Karc is a Polish abstract artist living in London. Her work takes abstract concepts ideas and transform them into geometrical artworks. Making strong use of colour, lines and shapes her work takes inspiration from the built environment around her.

A graduate of sculpture at the Gdansk Academy of Fine Art, Karc credits this education with her 3D way of thinking. Taking a shape she will begin to see it in a dissected form. Imagining how it would look and what that dissection might ultimately represent.

Representation
That representation might evolve it's way into giving form to concepts such as 'Togetherness' or 'Change'. Ideas that she has been thinking about but only now beginning to develop within the work.

Shapes
"It all starts with shapes" she tells me. "I like to divide simple shapes into more complicated forms... every single piece is like a new experiment". As they evolve those dissected shapes start to take on meaning which evolves and grows within the artwork. Those abstract ideas starting to take root as Karc starts to see the connections between them.

Art Evolution
Karc's career has taken her from those days of sculpture, portraits and geometry towards where we see her art today. A first street piece during lockdown ensured that the abstract would begin to take precedence. That first mural would result in many more and as we meet, her work dominates the wall of the old Chelsea Fire Station behind us.

Meant to Be
Interviewed as part of the Inspiring City 'Inspiring Artists' series. She tells me "I think when I paint there is a feeling that I am exactly where I'm meant to be". That sense of belonging with her art. It is a recognition that in order to be happy with her work she has had to experiment and take risks with her practice. Landing firmly in the abstract world. This is indeed where she is meant to be, for now at least.
Dominika Karc aka 'Karc' was interviewed in West London in October 2023 and recorded as part of the 'Inspiring Interview' series. You can find out more about her work by checking out her Instagram and website.
