In a significant development within the motorsports community, Maryland International Raceway (MIR) has officially announced the promotion of Joe Harty to the position of Operations Manager. This move is a testament to Harty's versatile skill set and unwavering dedication to the facility since joining the team in 2020.
Royce Miller, the Owner and Promoter of MIR, praised Harty for his comprehensive involvement in the raceway's operations. "Joe is one of those guys that just gets things done and is an invaluable part of the MIR team," Miller expressed. Harty's responsibilities have spanned various critical roles, including facility maintenance, track preparation, water box management, starter, technical inspections, and staging. "Joe has earned his promotion to Operations Manager, and we are fortunate to have him on the team," Miller added, highlighting Harty's significant contributions to the raceway.
Harty's journey with MIR began amidst the COVID-19 pandemic when he discovered a job posting that resonated with his interests. Reflecting on his start, Harty shared, "I was reading a post during the COVID-19 Pandemic on a social site about people speeding around my neighborhood, and someone commented about wishing that MIR would open back up." This led him to pursue an opportunity at MIR, starting as a Track Official in charge of the water box. His passion for the role and the environment at MIR was immediate. "I love it here!" Harty exclaimed, signaling his deep appreciation for the raceway and its community.
Harty's dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed, earning him rapid advancement within the organization. From his initial role, he quickly gained respect and moved up to become a Starter. In 2021, his responsibilities expanded further as he joined the full-time maintenance crew while continuing his weekend duties. His growing knowledge of MIR's operations, coupled with his excellence in pre and post-event execution, led to him receiving the Recognition of Excellence award in the same year.
Before joining MIR, Harty served as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Tennessee, a role that equipped him with valuable skills applicable to his work at the raceway. In February 2024, he further bolstered his qualifications by obtaining his Maryland EMT Certification, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
The Harty family's involvement with MIR extends beyond Joe's contributions. His wife, Denise Harty, serves as a Clock Operator Tower Official, and their sons, Dallas and Connor, are employed at MIR's Hot Rodz Diner, making their commitment to the raceway a family affair.
Harty expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: "I'm excited about working with staff and racers to help our events run smoothly." His eagerness to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with the Operations Manager position reflects his dedication to further contributing to MIR's success.
Joe Harty's promotion is a notable moment for Maryland International Raceway, highlighting the organization's recognition of hard work, expertise, and the importance of fostering talent from within. As Operations Manager, Harty is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the operational excellence of MIR, ensuring that the raceway continues to provide top-notch experiences for racers and spectators alike.
